Darkest Dungeon finally launches and will steal your sanity

We’ve been fascinated with Darkest Dungeon ever since the announcement trailer knocked us off our feet. Since then, Red Hook Studio’s brutal and mind-melting RPG smashed its Kickstarter campaign and turned out of be just as huge of a success on Steam Early Access. Two years later, we finally have a launch trailer.
Prepare to have your sanity destroyed. Darkest Dungeon launches today on Steam, and its official launch trailer hasn’t lost one step of its power. Whether it’s heart attacks, claustrophobia, or being stabbed in the back by your “ally,” Red Hook’s game is going to penetrate your skull and take pokes at the most sensitive areas of your subconscious.

Seriously, good luck playing this game with the lights off.
I’ve been waiting forever to finally play this game, since I avoid playing unfinished titles, but I might have to wait a bit longer. The free Steam copy I got from backing the campaign is sitting in my library as I write, but I’m holding out for the PS Vita version.
Darkest Dungeon launches today for the PC. It will also launch for the PS Vita and PlayStation 4 on an unspecified date.

Xbox 360 disc-scratching case to be heard by Supreme Court

The highest court in the land is taking a much needed vacation from ground-breaking decisions by focusing on the trivial matter of a video game console that scratched a few DVDs a decade ago. Microsoft has appealed to the Supreme Court over a class-action lawsuit that it is facing regarding a “design flaw” in its Xbox 360 console, and the justices have decided to hear the case.
Microsoft doesn’t contend that the scratches didn’t happen. Instead, the case has reached a point where Microsoft is saying that it shouldn’t even be facing the “class-action” lawsuit at all. It argues this because all of the original plaintiffs have since had their cases dismissed.
What’s also impressive is that even a decade later, this case hasn’t been taken to trial. A 2012 federal judge ruled that there weren’t enough complaints to warrant a class-action lawsuit, but a federal appeals court overturned that decision.
The complaints, which plaintiffs say is close to 55,000, state that the Xbox 360’s disc drive spins too fast, and the discs scratch against other areas if shaken from the tray. The plaintiffs also claim that Microsoft knew about the issue before selling the console.
Microsoft claims that the scratches only occurred because of human error, not because of a design flaw. Indeed, this did happen to me, but that was when I moved my Xbox 360 into a standing position while it was running. That was that big “no-no,” and it never happened again after I stopped touching the machine.
Is that human error or Microsoft’ fault?

EA’s Origin Access offers PC gamers unlimited access to select games

Electronic Arts, and by extension the Origin game service, is not particularly well-liked by gamers thanks to its heavy use of microtransactions and DLC packs. Perhaps it will earn some goodwill with a new service called Origin Access. PC gamers are able to subscribe to Access for a mere $4.99 per month and get early versions of unreleased games and unlimited access to The Vault, a Netflix-style selection of slightly older games.
EA calls the early access feature “First Play Trials,” and stresses that these will be full versions of the games, not demos. This feature will be limited to EA titles, but it has the potential to save you some real cash. When a game unlocks for First Play, you can dive in and see how it suits you. If you don’t like it, no problem — just don’t buy it when it comes out. If you do enjoy the game, you can play it as much as you want until it’s released, then buy the full version and have your First Play progress carry over.
There’s only one First Play Trial listed on the Origin site right now, a platforming game called Unravel. It will cost $19.99 when it launches on February 9th. Origin Access members will be able to start playing it on February 4th, though. As an added bonus, everything you buy on Origin comes with a 10% discount for Access subscribers.

What people will be more interested in, I think, is The Vault. As long as you keep paying your monthly subscription, you have access to all the full games in The Vault. Right now, that means 15 games, which include the following: Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe, Battlefield Hardline, Dead Space, Dead Space 2, Dead Space 3, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age Inquisition Digital Deluxe, Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition, FIFA 15, Need for Speed Rivals, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, SimCity, The Sims 3 Starter Pack, and This War of Mine.
EA says it will continue expanding the list of supported Vault games over time. Judging by the selection, it’s going to be a similar deal to what you get with Netflix — content from a year or two ago at least that’s cheap enough to license for unlimited access. A more apt comparison might actually be Nvidia’s $7.99 per month GeForce Now service. This is only available on Shield devices, but you get a selection of PC games from the recent past for unlimited gameplay. Nvidia also sells new titles via GeForce Now, but it’s all streamed to your device. Origin Access is still a standard download, as far as I’m aware.
The success of Origin Access will probably depend on whether or not EA can add significant content to The Vault. The First Play feature is a nice perk, but I don’t see many people paying EA monthly for early access to a few games when Steam is still the de facto digital game retailer.

Metal Gear Solid Unreal 4 remake looks awesome – video

Metal Gear Solid remade with shiny modern graphics. Wouldn’t say no.
Shadow Moses is a fan remake of Metal Gear Solid built in Unreal Engine 4. Creator Airam Hernandez has released first video footage of the project, and it’s looking pretty damn special.

I didn’t realise how much I wanted this till I saw it. Both Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 have been remastered, but the original Metal Gear Solid has gone without an updated re-release, despite strong fan demand, because it needs a full overhaul rather than an HD brush up.
We know that Metal Gear will continue even now that Hideo Kojima has left Konami. Maybe a remake of the 1998 classic would be a good warm up for the new development team? Just sayin’.

Black Ops 3 the best selling game of 2015 “by a wide margin,” series crosses 250 million sales

Just how big is Call of Duty? Well, it’s so big that even Star Wars can’t bring it down! The NPD Group has revealed the best selling games of 2015, and Call of Duty: Black Ops III sits atop the iron throne once again, ranking as both the best selling game in December and the best selling game in 2015 overall. Activision even describes its victory as a “wide margin.”
This marks seven straight years of domination with a Call of Duty title being North America’s best selling franchise. Even Grand Theft Auto V, which saw most of its sales slow-burn to huge numbers and split over two years, hasn’t been able to dethrone it. Call of Duty: Black Ops III sold so many copies that it was also able to push the series’ total lifetime sales to over 250 million units, as noted by Activision’s Senior Vice President and General Manager for Call of Duty Rob Kostich.
“Call of Duty: Black Ops III was the top-selling title of 2015 globally by a wide-margin in both units and dollars sold-thru. This also marks the seventh year in a row that Call of Duty has been the No. 1 selling franchise in North America, according to NPD. In fact, Call of Duty has surpassed 250 million units sold life-to-date worldwide.  This achievement is thanks to the amazing experiences created by all of our development teams, and would not be possible without the  incredible passion from the Call of Duty community. We congratulate Treyarch on creating an incredibly engaging and an enormously fun game with Black Ops III and look forward to what’s to come in 2016.”
Star Wars Battlefront, which EA was hoping would put a solid dent in Activision’s hold on the shooter market, closed out as the second best selling game in December and the fourth best of the year behind Fallout 4 and Madden.

Pokkén Tournament is coming to the Wii U this March

Nintendo announced that Pokkén Tournament will hit the Wii U on March 18, 2016.
I didn’t really think I wanted another fighting game for the Wii U after Super Smash Bros.released, but here I am looking forward to Pokkén Tournament. This title mashes Pokémon with a unique take on Tekken mechanics.

Currently, Pokkén Tournament is eating up Yen in Japanese arcades. It’s been known for a long time that it would hit home consoles, and today’s news from Nintendo simply puts a solid launch date on the title.
The game will sell for $59.99 of course, but Nintendo also announced an amiibo card system for the game.
People that buy the first production run version of the game will also receive a special Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card, which can be tapped to the Wii U GamePad controller to unlock the Shadow Mewtwo playable character in the game.
Shadow Mewtwo? Shadow Mewtwo.
Will you be picking up Pokkén Tournament?

China's Baidu may look to invest in Zomato, BookMyShow and BigBasket

Baidu Inc is in talks to invest in Indian e-commerce start-ups including  Zomato, BookMyShow and BigBasket, a spokesman for China's top online search provider said on Wednesday.
"The Indian market represents an enormous opportunity for us to connect more people with services, and we plan to put more resources there in the future," the spokesman told Reuters by email.
Baidu declined to comment on possible investment amounts or time frames.
India's technology start-up market is booming as more and more people shop online, in a country where about 20 percent of a population of 1.3 billion are connected to the Internet.
The e-commerce market could grow in terms of the value of goods sold to $220 billion by 2025 from $11 billion in 2015, Bank of America Merrill Lynch estimated.
That growth potential has attracted investment from global technology giants such as China's Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Japan's SoftBank Group Corp.
Zomato is India's leading restaurant search provider, while BookMyShow is the country's top online seller of movies and events tickets. BigBasket is an online grocer.
Zomato and BigBasket did not immediately reply to emails seeking comment. BookMyShow could not be immediately reached for comment.

Twilight Princess HD leak reveals new amiibo dungeon

We don’t know all that much about what Nintendo’s doing for the The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess HD on the Wii U. We know that it’s getting HD graphics, of course, and that it ships with  a Wolf Link and Midna amiibo.
Thanks to an information leak by Amazon France, we might know a little bit more. It looks like the amiibo that ships with the game will unlock a brand new dungeon.
NeoGAF user GhostTrick spotted and translated the Amazon.fr listing for Twilight Princess HD. Here’s their translation.
Unlock bonuses with “The Legend of Zelda” amiibos: Tap all the amiibos for the Zelda series to unlock bonuses in the game, such as regenerating your life, or getting arrows for your bow. The new Wolf Link amiibo even allows you to get into a new dungeon: “The Twilight Cave”. The data recorded on this Amiibo can even be transfered to the next episode on Wii U.
The Twilight Cave hopefully features the same dungeon quality that Twilight Princess was known for. Not to get on a soapbox here, but I felt that Skyward Sword‘s dungeons relied a bit too much on backtracking for difficulty padding.

Sony is sending out PlayStation Plus extension to make up for outage

Wait a minute! Was there a PlayStation Network outage this month?… Oh, there it is we wrote about it . I didn’t even notice.
Anyway, if you were affected and had your dreams ruined by not having access to PlayStation Network, or you just want a free extension at the expense of Sony, the company will be accommodating for the lost time. VG247 reports that Sony is sending out extensions via emails this month to those who were affected.
The extensions cover PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now, and video rentals. There is no mention of how to claim your extension, but VG247 guesses it will just happen automatically because that’s what happened the last time.
Seriously, when did this happen? What was I doing?

ASUS GX700

Key components
  • * An overclockable processor. Historically, gaming laptops typically don't let you overclock their components, but the ROG GX700 has a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-6820HK, one of the first mobile CPUs that you can overclock. It also happens to be one of the latest Intel Skylakeprocessors.

  • * Up to 64GB of DDR4 memory. Obviously, that's a lot.

  • * An Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 graphics chip with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. Not a GTX 980M mobile graphics processor--this laptop has the same graphics chip you find inside one of the most powerful desktop graphics cards that gamers are currently buying to place inside their PCs.

  • * A 1080p or even a 4K-resolution G-Sync display, like the one we recently enjoyed using in theAsus G751 gaming laptop. G-Sync tries to smooth out the picture quality during gaming by reducing screen stutter and tearing.

  • * The piece de resistance: a giant external water-cooling system which actually   pipes liquid coolant through the guts of this laptop to help cool those components down.

EVGA SC17

This 17-inch gaming notebook comes with an Intel Core i7 6820HK, a GeForce GTX 980M (not a real GTX 980 asNVIDIA announced it?), 16GB of DDR4 memory, two 128GB Samsung SSDs and a 4K display (3840×2160).

Sony Is Announcing 7 Games Next Week

"E3 was only half the story." Sony is apparently going to announce seven games next week. The company said in a  blog post to...
