They even gave it a 30-second video.

This 500GB console is set to sell for €299/£259 starting on January 24, 2017. Japan will see it on February 23, 2017, along with a 1TB version to boot.

Nintendo Switch launch date, games lineup, placeholders leaked by GameStop Germany

An employee at a GameStop in Germany snapped a picture of their system’s screen for what’s coming to the Nintendo Switch. The roster contains a specific software launch date, a bunch of games we knew or assumed would come and some particularly intriguing placeholder slots.
The release shared by all the software is March 19, 2017. If that’s true, then the Nintendo Switch will launch on March 19, 2017, in Germany, at least. A worldwide launch for the platform seems likely, so I imagine we’ll see it on the same day everywhere if this leak is legit.

The confirmed launch lineup isn’t all that surprising, though a few games are worth calling out. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is slated for day one, despite earlier rumors suggesting otherwise. We’ll also see Skyrim alongside the Switch, another release that’s been a question mark since the system’s unveiling.

The most intriguing listings to me are the placeholders

Then there are the placeholder slots. There are five of them, and we’re not sure what games will occupy those spaces. Lots of folks think the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will get a Switch port, and that’s totally possible. What about the other unannounced games?
Pikmin 4? Maybe. Miyamoto said recently that the work on that game is close to done, so it could totally find its way onto the Nintendo Switch at launch. As a fan of Pikmin, I’d be pumped.
What mysterious games are you hoping to see in those placeholder slots? We’ll know if they crack the launch lineup this week when Nintendo holds the special Switch event. Stay tuned.

Injustice 2 gets a May release date for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Injustice 2, the next game in NetherRealm’s DC Universe fighting series, will be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 16, 2017. Confirmation of the release date comes straight from studio head Ed Boon’s personal Twitter account.

Marvel vs Capcom vs DC vs Mortal Kombat… it’s all going down in 2017

2017 will finally be the year that we get a Marvel fighting game and a DC fighting game released alongside one another. Capcom already announced Marvel vs Capcom Infinite last year at PlayStation Experience, and that game stars both Marvel’s heroes and iconic characters from Capcom’s franchises, including Street Fighter.
NetherRealm has done a fantastic job rejuvenating DC fighting games and the Mortal Kombat series in general. In terms of gaming pedigree, it has the upper hand in this fight since Capcom isn’t firing on all fronts at the moment. However, Marvel is clearly the mainstream favorite these days with its Hollywood movies dominating DC left and right, and the money will swing in its direction.
Who knows which will emerge on top when all is said and done? Injustice 2 will be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 16.

Razer’s Project Valerie is a beastly laptop that sports three 4K displays

The beauty of a home setup is having the space and flexibility to take advantage of multiple displays. But you just can’t get that experience if you want to be portable. Razer’s new Project Valerie aims to change that.
If you thought Acer’s $9,000 laptop was absurd, that’s at least something you can soon own (assuming you have the money). With Project Valerie, Razer has dreamt up a concept that might not even make it to market. But if this is the next innovation in portable desktops, sign me up, because Valerie is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.
Project Valerie is system that takes advantage of three 17.3-inch 4K IGZO displays, which all combine to provide users with the most efficient and immersive experience possible. The device opens up like a normal laptop, but once its automatic deployment mechanism kicks in, the other monitors will deploy for even more space to work with. It’s like a butterfly spreading its beautiful wings.
The laptop (if you want to call it that) is essentially a 17-inch Razer Blade Pro with two additional monitors attached to it. So not only are you getting the convenience of a multi-monitor setup, but you’re getting the raw power of Razer’s most beastly machine.
Razer says the proposed system measures at 1.5 inches thick and weigh less than 12 pounds. To keep the machine cool, Razer says Project Valerie comes equipped with the company’s renowned thermal management system, along with a custom-designed fan and dynamic heat exchanges that pair with a vapor chamber. In other words, Valerie should stay cool, whether you’re gaming or just doing regular work.
“Multi-monitor desktop setups are becoming more necessary for professionals, creators, and gamers,” said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “For the first time, we’ve engineered a solution that users can take with them. Project Valerie promises all of the functionality of three screens and none of the hassle.”

It’s only a concept at this point

Project Valerie only exists as a concept, so don’t expect to have one sitting in your messenger bag anytime soon. We got to mess around with a working prototype (hands-on to come) and it was very clear things are in the early stages. You’d expect that from a laptop with three 4K screens. But it showed a lot of promise and it’s friggin’ cool as hell in-person.

Other potential specs weren’t revealed by Razer, although the company did mention the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080, which would also make Valerie VR-reader.
The monstrous Acer laptop we saw, while expensive, is fathomable and something that can exist. Razer’s Project Valerie is an enigma, a crazy concept that has no business existing—yet Razer believes it can make it work. Whether it becomes a product consumers can buy is another matter entirely. If it does exist one day, you can bet it won’t be cheap.
Can you imagine someone using this thing on an airplane? I would not want to sit next to that person.

Razer’s Project Ariana bathes your room in gaming bliss

In addition to unveiling its three-monitor Frankenstein laptop, Razer this week also introduced Project Ariana, a projection system the company says is designed for total immersion gaming. I got to see a live demo of the concept here at CES, and it’s as cool as it sounds.
Project Ariana is meant to complement your existing Razer setup, taking advantage of the company’s Chroma platform to completely cover your room in your favorite games. Razer showed off a demo of Shadow Warrior 2, which looks incredible on its own. But when used in conjunction with Ariana, the experience is elevated to the next level.
The whole goal is to tap into Chroma and provide ambience for the experience in front of you. In the Ariana demo room, the main focus was on the TV mounted on the wall. Once Ariana was turned on, the projector’s 155-degree fisheye lens bathed the entire wall with Shadow Warrior 2.

Seeing Ariana in action gave off the impression that the game had escaped from beyond the TV’s borders. Playing a game like Shadow Warrior 2, which is fast paced and action-oriented, worked perfectly with Ariana, providing an immersive experience you can’t get with a normal setup.
Although Ariana projects at 4K, seeing images stretched across a wall looked about as good as you’d expect. Which is to say, not amazing but not bad. The whole point of Ariana is to immerse gamers in the game in front of them, and it certainly succeeds at doing that.

You’ll need the right setup

How much a person gets out of Ariana will really depend on what their setup is like at home. In the demo, Razer set up a desk with a PC about ten feet in front of a TV, with Ariana mounted directly above the desk. There were also lights set up around the room that used Razer’s Chroma technology, adding to the overall experience.
“This is the future of Razer Chroma as we see it,” said Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan. “We are working toward new video projection technology designed to place users in their games for total gaming immersion. Having a game literally surround a gamer completes the entire ecosystem of gaming, bridging the sensor gap between player and game.”

If you’re not quiet sold on the whole VR thing, Ariana might be a worthwhile alternative. You get a similar level of immersion without strapping a bulky headset to your face. But that’s assuming Razer turns Ariana into a product consumers can buy.
Right now, the company wants to gauge how much interest there is in the concept. If consumers demand it, we might see it released at some point in the future. Based on what I saw, I wouldn’t mind having one of these in my living room the next time I play Outlast. Oh god, that sounds terrifying.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 to be a Nintendo Switch exclusive for one year, says rumor

Ubisoft may be priming the reveal cannon for a bit of a show during Nintendo’s Switch event next week. One insider with a really strong track record has it that Beyond Good & Evil 2 will make its appearance at the end of the Nintendo Switch reveal presentation.
This comes from Laura Kate Dale, an insider who’s been really on point over the last few months leading up to the Nintendo Switch’s announcement. She fired off a few tweets regarding Beyond Good & Evil 2 yesterday.
First, the sequel will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch for 12 months. After that, it’ll be a digital release on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox one.

BGE2 codename is Odyssey. Exclusive to Switch for 12 months only, retail and digital versions. after 12 months digital on PS4 and XB1.
The teaser for the game is finished, apparently, and on track to debut at the end of Nintendo’s Switch event on the 12th.

BGE2 Odyssey teaser is done. Likely to be at the end of the end of Jan 12 event.

This Ubisoft and Nintendo partnership isn’t unprecedented

If we look back at the Wii U, only one third party company was really present for the launch in a big way. That was Ubisoft, and they seem more willing to take risks with Nintendo’s new efforts than other massive game makers. They had ZombiU at launch, and then we were supposed to see Rayman Legends exclusively on the Wii U.
That second game didn’t work out, mostly because the Wii U simply wasn’t selling at retail.

This partnership, based on these rumors, feels more concrete. Hopefully the Switch doesn’t go the way of the Wii U. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Beyond Good & Evil, and it’s a franchise I’d definitely take with me on the Switch.

Nvidia’s new Shield TV adds 4K HDR and Google Assistant

Nvidia this week officially unveiled a new Shield TV, one of the market’s best set-top boxes on the market. The updated model was announced at an event in Las Vegas for CES 2017.
The biggest addition to the new Shield TV, which will retail for $199 when it’s available next month, is support for 4K HDR. With 4K becoming a common media in streaming, HDR is the next step in home entertainment. As part of the new feature, Nvidia announced it has added Amazon Video in 4K HDR, the first Android TV device to offer the feature.
Thankfully, existing Shield TV device will gain the same feature thanks to an update expected to roll out later this month.

Additionally, the Shield TV will also add support for Google Assistant, the search giant’s powerful new artificial intelligence. Like with Google Home, users will be able to mutter hands-free commands to Assistant through the Shield TV’s included remote. Shield TV users can also take advantage of an additional peripheral, called Nvidia Spot, that can be placed anywhere in the home.

Nvidia’s Shield TV has always been marketed as more than a simple Android TV device. In addition to having access to the Google Play Store, the Shield TV can also access Nvidia services, including GeForce Now, a subscription service that provides users with unlimited streaming of over 100 PC games.
The new Shield TV is available now for pre-order for $199 and is expected to ship later this month. The Nvidia Spot mic accessory will retail for $49.99.

Epic says the Nintendo Switch has many Unreal Engine-based games in development

Nintendo has always had a problem garnering third-party developer support. The Nintendo Switch, if the slide above is any indication, could finally solve that issue.
One of the most popular development engines for games publishing through third-parties on modern consoles? Unreal. Epic’s engine is supported by the Nintendo Switch, and that’s huge news. Consider the door wide open for third-party game makers.

Epic Games Japan Territory Manager Takayuki Kawasaki spoke with Social VR Info, a Japanese site. As covered by Nintendo Everything, Kawasaki indicated that there are many Unreal Engine-based games in development for the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo needs the third-party love

Nintendo can’t make the Switch a success with only first-party software. They need more games to fill the gaps between their banner releases, and the console boasting Unreal Engine support goes a long way towards making that possible.
Hopefully the games in development are good ones. That always helps, right?

Google is being sued by one of its employees over “spying program”

Google is reportedly being sued by a product manager at the company for its confidentiality policies, according to The Information. Apparently, the suit, which was filed in California Superior Court in San Francisco, alleges Google is spying on its own employees, violating California labor laws.
Google’s internal policies are allegedly there to encourage employees not to put concerns of illegal activity into writing, which the company fears could fall into the hands of regulators and law enforcement. Employees are also discourages from writing novels about people working in Silicon Valley.
The Information claims the same employee filed a suit earlier this year with the National Labor Relations Board with similar complaints.
“Google has since amended its Data Classification Guidelines, which were the subject of the labor complain,” The Information writes.

Don’t be evil

Should the employee successfully sue Google, the company could be forced to reveal confidential information. Google’s currently policies are meant to dissuade individuals from leaking information to law enforcement or the press. So, what is Google hiding?
That’s a question that will no doubt be raised over the coming months.
The Verge has a copy of the 24-page complaint, which you can read in full at their site.
“Google’s motto is ‘don’t be evil.’ Google’s illegal confidentiality agreements, policies, and practices fail this test,” the lawsuit alleges.
